The big fat groveling post of housing doom! ~or~ East-Coast destinition augering; part one?
I've been putting this post off for some time now, because it feels, I don't know, kind of off-kilter, but I'd be a waste not to. Here's the thing: On May 22nd or so, I'm going to be moving to Boston
. The trip will last a little over two or so weeks, so I hope to be there by about June 10th
. It's now time for me to arrange for lodging there. After haunting Craigslist, it looks like my best bet is to room with somebody again. I could try to do so with a complete stranger, which would be alright, but if I can do so with somebody that somebody I know knows and could vouch for, that would be pretty neat. As it just so happens, a bunch of you either live in Boston or know a lot of people in the area. I'm putting this to you folks: is there anybody who is going to need a roommate then? Or something like that? "No" is also an acceptable answer! If any body's interested, here's what I can say about myself:Good points :D
Clean, responsible, quiet, I seem to be easy to get along with, no allergies, independent, I don't smoke, and don't have any animals (but I think it's awesome if you do).Bad points: :[
Fiercely independent (Where am I? WHO KNOWS! D: I didn't tell anybody where I was going the night before wooooo!), and I get a little testy when I'm living in what I perceive to be a messy environment.
I'm looking for anything less than like $600/month if possible, but that's not a total hard limit. I have student loans and such to get through, so... I can't spend everything I make on rent and utilities.thetakogun
can both confirm all of this, and I can give you the number for my current landlord (who is sadly hard to get hold of but still) if asked.

Ummm... welcome to Boston? o_O
I'm in a situation where I could provide a temporary holding place (i.e. for a week) but probably not much longer, given my lease. (Also, that I myself am a bit too fiercely independent to really share a place with someone at this point.)
I will note for you that in particular June and September are big moving times, given the college schedule.
We probably should talk about this extensively. I'd like to think I know this place well enough to help.

Actually, I might know one person who might be seeking a roommate, at least the last time I checked... I'll have to check in with him again. Can you tolerate AB?
Tue, Apr. 21st, 2009 07:43 pm (UTC)
AB? As in Anime Boston or the Egyptian concept of the heart-soul? I think I could happily tolerate both. But yes! On the off-chance it works out, well, it works out.
Tue, Apr. 21st, 2009 09:25 pm (UTC)
...actually, I was talking more about Adult Babies...
Wed, Apr. 22nd, 2009 07:42 am (UTC)
Sigh, well, I've been pals with Alfador for, gods, 6 years? I'll admit I still find the whole manner strange, but I can live with it. (Plus, I mean, if I openly discussed some of my kinks... it's easy to make me sound like monsterous to a layperson.) Whom are we speaking of, anyhow?
Wed, Apr. 22nd, 2009 11:13 am (UTC)
An old friend of mine... postrodent
's ex, actually. He's in a AB-oriented relationship, but I think the last time I checked they were looking for a third as roommate. That was a few months ago...

The augeries are indicating that I'm not going to figure out who this person is using Livejournal. I'm keeping tuned to this station. It's a better lead than a most of the options I'm finding on Craigslist.
Wed, Apr. 22nd, 2009 10:40 pm (UTC)
The person does not have an LJ - I'll be more likely to see them on IM this weekend. I should also note one particular thing: the Posts and I are one node of Boston furrydom. We're far, far from the only one. We just don't generally deal with the other ones either for lack of knowledge or for other reasons.
Wed, Apr. 22nd, 2009 10:48 pm (UTC)
That's just fine by me. Whoever it is is FOAF a couple of times, and that's as good as any recommendation. Plus, I mean... furries are pretty good people, generally. I know that might sound weird, but in my experience, I've been able to get along with them much better than other types of people I might socialize with. Maybe because it falls under the general Internet-People nerd umbrella, but I find them relatable.
Oh gods... is that a prejudice? Am I biased?
Fri, Apr. 24th, 2009 01:52 am (UTC)
Nope, no good. They fixed their issue a couple of months ago...
I don't have any particular options then for you. You'd have to ask circuit_four
Fri, Apr. 24th, 2009 09:23 am (UTC)
Oh, well. On the upside, that means that they weren't trying to fill a room for, like, months. 0-o On the subject of what I'm going to do next, maybe I will bug Nick about it, but... I don't feel quite right about that for some reason. I kind of felt sleazy making this post to begin with, as well as making you do a bunch of stuff. Especially when I really ought
to do it directly.
In any case, thanks! I really mean that, I appreciate your patience with me, and all the oddness I've put you through over this. You rock!
Tue, Apr. 21st, 2009 07:49 pm (UTC)
Nice offer, but I'm going to need a solid landing point. Thanks for the crash offer, though!
It's a city with an intimidatingly huge undergraduate population, yeah. Craigslist is fast and furious right now, but it would be preferable to keep it among acquaintances with a community of mutual trust and reputation -- and I believe that's what I have at my disposal here.
You have no idea how much even entertaining this means for me. I won't forget it. (That doesn't mean I'm completely relying on you or something, just that I appreciate whatever comes of this, even if it's nothing tangible.)
Tue, Apr. 21st, 2009 09:27 pm (UTC)
Well, I can at least give you the lay of the land. I could talk about Boston for quite a while, but I will say that it is a peculiar city, and imo it takes a certain sentiment to like it.
On the other hand, it's got good transportation, good density, and the college population tends to make sure things stay fresh.

Even if it should lose service and employees because of the global worldwide AAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! I'm still looking forward to the MBTA. I don't have to own a car! I won't have to drive anymore! *tears o' joy* It's like, what, 60$~ for the monthly passes now? Compare that to fuel, insurance, parking fees, inevitable repairs and upkeep, and those damned tickets versus that?
SIGN ME RIGHT THE FUCK UP I MEAN
It's more than amenable.
Wed, Apr. 22nd, 2009 11:30 am (UTC)
$70. Or half that if your company pays for it like mine. ...but I shouldn't probably be mentioning this, should I...
I mean, that's the exact primary reason I came back here too, but there are limitations to it. Namely, that the cheaper single apartments are generally nowhere near the T system. (And the roommate situations are generally near the Green Line, which is a discussion by itself...)
I think it would be useful to speak over IM about some of this. I did put a request your way on GTalk.
However, two things to get you started:
* Map of Boston Squares
- It's a bit nontraditional, but it's much easier to understand the layout of Boston this way, because the road geography tends to make no sense. But if you look at it as a node and spoke system, it becomes more clear. (Also more drivable, if needed.) It's also often the preferred reference for where people are located if they're in the dense urban areas.
* T System Map
- This should give you an idea of what is and isn't possible. It's a shame that the T hasn't gotten itself together with Google Maps - once upon a time Google was showing all the T bus stops, but now it's just subway, it looks like.

Yeah, I knew about the MBTA funding issue. Still, it might end up not affecting me for all I know. Maybe they'll actually intimidate Massachusetts into finding the capital. In any case, it would be a little reactionary if I decided to change any of my plans based upon that.
I would love to talk to you over something more instantaneous, but have you noticed the time stamps on these? They have me working the middle of my day, and with the four hour difference and what times you tend to be on yyyyyyyeah sadly there's only a couple of hours overlap. I'll try to keep Gmail open, though!
Wed, Apr. 22nd, 2009 09:35 pm (UTC)
Yeah, the weekend would likely be far better.
Wed, Apr. 22nd, 2009 07:03 pm (UTC)
Oh, you said GTalk! About that, um, it's Windows and Mac right now. It's not completely cross-platform. Which means... I can't use it as of right now. I'm a *ix person. Who is also too lazy to figure out WINE and such. :c
Wed, Apr. 22nd, 2009 09:34 pm (UTC)
Not even on Firefox in the web browser? o_O
Wed, Apr. 22nd, 2009 10:37 pm (UTC)
Oh, great, while I was doing stuff you were on! XP
Well, Gchat is different than GTalk. GTalk is a telephony service, which in all incarnations is Windows and Mac. The Gmail chat thing is the only IM service I really use any more.
Wed, Apr. 22nd, 2009 10:39 pm (UTC)
I'm talking about the IM service, not the voice service.
I tried to request you on what I have, and it still lists mass.treble@... as "Not Authorized." Try adding cubeotter?
Wed, Apr. 22nd, 2009 08:31 pm (UTC)
...I can't find any sort of email address for you. Is it guessable?
