After a little harmless surfing...

It re-occured to me just how hate-filled the 'net is. What the heck is wrong with us?

Gabriel's Greater Internet Fuckwad theory explains it rather well.

The internet makes it very very easy to get your subject out. You can very easily put out a hate-filled message on a whim - it only takes a few minutes to get an account at an average forum, for instance.

Out in the "real world," if you want to put your ideas out in public, it's much harder. There's just so much to add to your inhibitions.

But on the Internet, you can do anything you want to without coming into direct contact with anyone. That makes it easier to be a dick, I think.

masstreble: Rolling around in my subconcious.

So, in other words...

It is an idea I always took as tongue-in-cheek, but now I should give it some serious consideration. It is, however, depressing that the threat of pain and bodily harm is the only control on behaviour. I guess I still have some niave-ness rolling around in my subconcious. :P

I don't think it's really fear of ass-whoopin'. I actually think it has more to do with the fact that if there's nobody around to respond immediately, it's easier to say.

Honestly, I'm affected by that too. It's much easier for me to send an e-mail when I'm steamed about something at school or something than bring it up in person.

It's all about the inhibitions, though, and because everyone on the Internet is (or at least feels) totally anonymous, the inhibitions are sorely lacking.

masstreble: Somehow, Penny Arcade ends up in this.

I think Penny Arcade has a strip that perfectly illustrates this. "Completely Normal Person + Illusion of Anonymity = TOTAL JACKASS." or something like that.
